On the final day of Women of Aviation Week, we conclude our Spotlight Series with the story of Anna, our Manager, Safety & Quality.
Aviation has always fascinated me. This year marks my 15th anniversary in the industry. My journey began when I was 12, inspired by the movie “View from the Top,” where a flight attendant’s passion to belong to the aviation world captivated me.
I started at the Flight Academy, where my first lecture still stands out. We studied some of the most tragic aviation accidents and the steps taken to prevent them. A military investigator once told us, “You’ll need to deal with sad events and may lose friends in the sky. Study hard to prevent that.”
I graduated with a degree in Aviation Safety & Security Engineering and became a Search & Rescue Coordinator. My path led me to the military, but I left because women weren’t allowed in the positions I aimed for. There are always ups and downs, but so many opportunities arise if you’re willing to try.
Civil aviation welcomed me as a Safety & Security Inspector, and I later worked as an Air Marshal and Flight Crew member. In 2022, Custom Helicopters Ltd. became my second family. I started as a Flight Operations QA Auditor and was recently promoted to Safety & Quality Manager.
I sometimes wonder what might have happened had I made different decisions, but that’s the beauty of life — we’ll never know. What drives me is my admiration for the industry and the people in it. I believe in my work and want to help ensure everyone goes home safely. The sky is where my heart belongs.
The aviation industry is vast, with many roles beyond pilots, air traffic controllers, and maintenance engineers. Even those in the background are crucial to the industry’s success. If you’re dreaming of a career in aviation, go for it. It won’t always be easy, but it’s worth it if it makes you happy. You’ll never know unless you try.

As our Women of Aviation Week Spotlight Series continues, we are sharing Ashlyn’s story. Ashlyn is a pilot here at Custom Helicopters.
Background: I grew up as an aviation enthusiast after a very positive experience with a flight crew allowing me into the cockpit to assist with landing when I was very young going on a family vacation, something that would be unheard of in these days. I wanted to fly jets all through school, probably inspired by all the documentaries and war movies I watched with my dad as a kid. As I got older, I grew more interested in helicopters. I decided becoming a HEMS pilot was my future. After flight school I started in pipeline and worked my way up. After 10 years in the industry, I will soon start flying as a First Officer for the HEMS program here at Custom Helicopters.
What I enjoy: The scope of work in this industry is so vast that every pilot has a completely different experience over the course of their career. I am learning every day and know I will continue to learn until I retire, which I think is important in a career choice. The flying itself is incredible and the experiences I’ve had and the people I’ve met have enriched my life. It is not always easy being a mom and working away, but my son loves what I do, and the job allows us a lot of time together on my days off to go on trips and experience life together, and I couldn`t ask for a more supportive family behind me.
Advice for others: Research the career thoroughly and make the decision on your own, not everyone will support you so you have to be that person for yourself when things get difficult. Be self-confident, set boundaries and advocate for yourself, and keep looking ahead in the beginning when things are tough and you`re hungry for hours. It will all come with patience, and it is worth it!

Up next in our Spotlight Series for Women of Aviation Week, we are sharing Jennifer’s story, a pilot at Custom Helicopters.
I joined aviation as a second career, after starting out as a geophysicist in the mineral exploration industry. So far, I’ve loved the wide range of travel and the opportunity to meet people from all kinds of industries. No two days are the same, and I thrive on how plans always change and the excitement that comes with it!
As a woman in aviation, I’ve noticed that while we’re still a minority, the right companies can make you forget that entirely. I truly feel that way at Custom, where I’m valued for my skills and experience, not just my gender.

As Women of Aviation Week continues, we are happy to share Karie’s story, Aircraft Maintenance Engineer at Custom Helicopters.
Aviation is an adventure every single day. Whether it’s third-party maintenance, firefighting, logging, or remote field work, the opportunities are as diverse as the aircraft we work on! I`ve had the privilege of working on a wide range of aircraft, including iconic fixed-wing planes like the Beavers, Cessna, Stinson, Kodiak, and helicopters like the Sikorsky 61, Bell 206/407, and ASTAR, and I’m only just getting started!
Aviation is full of people who uphold high standards, and I love working alongside others who aim to do their absolute best. I enjoy hearing their stories, sharing experiences, and building a strong, supportive network.
If you’re passionate about learning, aviation is the place for you. There’s so much to explore, and the satisfaction of knowing that your skills are keeping an aircraft safe and operational is incredibly rewarding. Women bring unique skills to the workbench, and there’s a beautiful balance in the workplace when we come together. Don’t let anyone tell you it`s not for you — we bring something valuable to the table!

First up in our Women in Aviation Week Spotlight Series is one of Custom Helicopters’ Aircraft & Crew Scheduler’s, Abbey.
Before joining Custom, I spent two years at Keewatin Air as a Training & Records Administrator, gaining valuable experience in the aviation field.
I’ve been working in aviation for almost four years now, and every day has been an exciting learning experience. The industry’s fast-paced, ever-evolving nature has taught me to stay agile, think on my feet, and embrace change at every opportunity.
I highly encourage anyone considering a career to explore aviation—it’s a field that truly has something for everyone. At Custom Helicopters, we work together as a tight-knit team, where every individual is valued and feels like part of the family.

As March approaches, we are throwing it back to last year, when we were getting ready for Cain’s Quest - the longest and toughest snowmobile endurance race in the world. Custom provided air support for the race with a B2.
Competitors of the race travelled more than 3,000 km in a week, covering much of Labrador and parts of Quebec.
Here are some photos shared with us by our friends at @cainsquest. Thank you for sharing, we were thrilled to be part of the race!
